Abstract

Aquatic ecosystems, in recent times, have been altered due to anthropic actions. Toxic metals, such as cadmium (Cd), are released into the environment as a result of mining processes and industries. These metals may negatively influence aquatic life, especially the physiology of animals, altering their reproductive cycle, as well as the maturation of the reproductive organs and the release/inhibition of hormones related to reproduction and molting, specially in crustaceans. Therefore, the objective of the project will be to evaluate the influence of Cd on reproduction and molting processes in Callinectes danae, considering animals coming from ambient with different levels of pollution and exposure. Organs related to the reproductive cycle, (for example organ X, sinus gland and gonads), as well as the molting process, will be evaluated through morphological and physiological changes induced by the contaminant. Reproductive hormones will be measured, as well as melatonin levels, relating this compound to the reproductive cycle. We expect to obtain results regarding the relationship between Cd and reproduction, as well as to assess how typically contaminated environments can interfere directly in the reproductive process of the animal.
