Abstract Correlators of vibratory signals are widely used in the detection and location of leaks in buried water distribution pipes. This vibro-acoustic technique uses the calculation of the delay of signals from two sensors together with the information from the velocity at which the noise generated by the leak propagates in the structure. However, the effectiveness of such correlation technique depends directly on the user experience, i.e., which parameters to use in the calculation of the cross-correlation (delay between the signals), for instance, the frequency range at which the signal energy of the leak is located. Moreover, the calculation of propagation velocity of the wave generated by the presence of leakage varies drastically depending on the characteristics of the environment and even between the sections of the same pipe. This project has as main objective analytical models of buried pipe system using theory of wave propagation to investigate different external excitation mechanisms, that provide vibratory energy in the frequency range where leaks are found aiming the estimated calculation of their speed of propagation. In addition, the use of different types of sensors, such as MEMS (Micro-electro-mechanical systems) and piezoelectric accelerometers, will be studied in the acquisition and characterization of leakage signals (estimated calculation of signal delay and speed propagation of the noise generated by the leak). The optimum positioning, as well as orientation of the sensors connected to the pipeline buried in the access points to the system will also be studied. Experimental measurements will be made in an experimental field provided by the SABESP water company located in the city of São Paulo for validation of the models and results obtained. | |
