Abstract

This research seeks to compare the educational concept of University of Brasília (UnB) developed by anthropologist Darcy Ribeiro with the design premises of the campus by Oscar Niemeyer. The UnB is remarkable for its inovative features both in its educational approach as to its architectural complex, rendered as an unified building, avoiding unnecessary multiplication of units, promoting then an intense cultural integration inside the campus. As objective we intend to apprehend the architectural concept of the campus as a reflection of the educational reform proposed by Ribeiro, and in a broader sense, how the architecture itself has helped the educational intents of the anthropologist to be fulfilled and how it has given a contribution to Brazilian Modern Architecture. The first part of the research focuses on Ribeiro and the UnB, considering the overall context in which the campus proposal was in - during the founding of Brasília. The second part concerns the design analysis of the campus, since its first site plan made by Lucio Costa until the unifying design by Niemeyer, seeking to show how the intents of Ribeiro became space. As a conclusion, we will trace the whereabouts of the paralyzation of the UnB building process when the military dictatorship took control in 1964, therefore analyzing the legacy of this experience, prematurely interrupted by political reasons.
