Abstract

The prevalence of overweight and obesity has increased steadily in Brazil, from the 1970s onwards. In parallel, job stress has been known as an important risk factor for illnesses. There are descriptions in the international scientific literature about anthropometric and metabolic profiles, including metabolically benign obesity and metabolically adverse obesity. Hypothesizing that stress is associated with the phenotype of the metabolically adverse obesity, studies that investigate the relationship between these two factors, highly prevalent in our environment, may have important implications in the design of therapeutic strategies for patients with obesity. Objective: To investigate the association between job stress scale and the phenotype of Metabolically Benign Obesity in the population of participants in the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil).Methods: The ELSA-Brasil is a multicenter cohort study of 15,105 civil servants from six Brazilian universities and research institutes. This study uses data collected at the baseline examination between 2008 and 2010. The classification of individuals in anthropometric and metabolic profiles uses the metabolic syndrome definition of National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). The job stress scale is based on the Brazilian version of the Swedish Demand-Control-Support Questionnaire (DCSQ). (AU)
