Abstract

Background: Speech rate may play an important role in the variability of stuttering. Aim: To verify the effects of rapid speech and slow speech on speech fluency in adults who stutter and who do not stutter. Methods: Twenty adults will participate in this study, of which 10 adults who stutter will form the Research Group (RG), and 10 adults who do not stutter, matched by gender and age to RG, will form the Comparative Group (CG). After signing the informed consent, all adults will be submitted to speech fluency assessment, assessment of the stuttering severity and self-perceived speech questionnaire. The speech sample of spontaneous speech will be performed at three speech rates, usual, rapid and slow. For each speech rate a theme will be proposed to the adult to speak about. The Praat software will be used to measure the time spent on each speech sample collected. Analysis of the results: The results will be analyzed regarding to the effects of alterations in speech rate in RG and CG through the comparison of disfluencies frequency, speech rate and stuttering severity in the three speech samples with statistical analysis of data.
