Vanillin and divanillin: antitumor effects on murine osteosarcoma cells

Abstract

The incidence of cancer is increasing every year and it is known that only 5 - 10% are due to genetic factors, so 90% are related to environmental factors. Osteosarcoma is a type of bone cancer that affects mainly children and adolescents, affecting negatively patients' quality of life. In view of this, it is known that natural products are bioactive compounds which may be an alternative for treatment of tumors. Vanillin and divanillin are vanilla-based compounds and according to the literature, they have antitumor and anticancer activity. However, there are no studies demonstrating their effects on osteosarcoma cells. Thus, this work aims to study the compounds vanillin and divanillin, by means of in vitro assays, in osteosarcoma and preosteoblasts cells murine. For this, the cell viability assays, reactive oxygen species, the effect of the compounds on a cell migration and formation of colonies are adopted. The results are analyzed using the GraphPad Prisma program, and are submitted to test t, one-way ANOVA complemented by the Tukey test, and Kruskal-Wallis complemented by the Dunn test, where appropriate.
