Abstract

This project intents to develop an investigation about Itaquera, one of the most populous and important neighborhood in the East region of São Paulo City. The main goal is to understand the role of the train station of Itaquera in 1875, part of the Railroad of the North, after, Central do Brasil. We noticed that after this episode the region went through a growing wave of transformations, modification of the landscape and in its social aspect either. After the railroad one could perceive the increasing number of popular settlements, in lands that were weekend properties and farms of the São Paulo elite. The investigation of the direct relation between the installation of the train and these transformations is what this objective research work. Through sources like old editions of the Correio Paulistano - with announcements of lots - minutes of the São Paulo City Hall - to search for data on land concessions, levies, etc. - documents from the Paulista Museum Aguirra Collection and documents from the São Paulo State - JUCESP -, we will weave the plot that surrounds that territory and temporality, which goes until the end of 1920, when Law No. 1756 was enacted, tranforming Itaquera in a "District of Peace". The essential methodology is the analysis of territorial transformation, through the indicated sources. (AU)
