Abstract

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a promising treatment for the different heath areas, associated to microorganism inactivation and tumor treatment. Due to the low cost, methylene blue (MB), a phenothiazine molecule has been widely used as a photosensitizer in Brazil. The other phenothiazine dyes have been barely studied, such as Azure A, Azure B and Dimethyl-methylene blue, however they can be interesting for PDT applications. Due to their similar structure to MB the may present similar activity or even superior. Literature reports regarding MB-PDT effectivity are conflicting. Due to the physical-chemical properties, MB may have its activity modulated depending on the medium in which it is in. Besides, its action mechanism may be defined by the aggregation state, however systematic studies regarding these subjects are still sparce. In this sense, the establishment of relationships between aggregation, action mechanism and effectivity, as well as the establishment of formulations that may favor de most effective mechanism are essential. The objective of this project is to evaluate the photobiological efficiency of phenothiazines in various media, such as water, saline, phosphate saline buffer and in the presence of molecules that can affect MB aggregation (sodium dodecylsulfate and urea). It is also an objective to compare the compound within the series. (AU)
