Abstract

In this project plan we intend to explore changes in the correlation patterns between sea surface temperature (SST) and summer precipitation in South America in the region influenced by the South Atlantic Convergence Zone (SACZ), through the use of different analysis of spatial and temporal patterns in paleoclimatic scale. Three different periods, with different forcings for paleoclimatic changes, will be analyzed: Last Glacial (21k before the present), Middle Holocene (6k before present) and Last Millennium. The study of the models' behavior and ability to simulate large scale features at different times in the paleoclimatic scale will help to understand the possible mechanisms responsible for climate change in the past, which will certainly contribute greatly to the understanding of possible climate predictions in the future.
