Cytological study of the conjunctiva of maned wolves (Chrysocyon brachyurus - Illiger, 1815) by the brush abrasion method

Abstract

As a result of the intense deforestation of the Maned Wolfs (Chrysocyon brachyurus) natural habitat, this species started to break into urban areas chasing for food. Franca-SP is a city located 200 km from Serra da Canastra National Park, which is a region with a high population density of the canid, and the Universidade de Franca´s Veterinary Hospital often performs clinical care of this species, previously captured by the Environmental Police in urgent and emergency situation. Therefore, reference data regarding the parameters of normality in healthy individual are extremely important for a better treatment. In this sense, as the conjunctiva is a mucous membrane with well-developed defense mechanisms, which respond quite fast to harmful stimulus, the knowledge about its cellularity in wild species can deliver important information for the ocular assessment of the maned Wolf. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the cellular structures, obtained by the brush abrasive technique, in anesthetized maned wolves, from a preservationist breeding facility. Samples were collected in both eyes and carefully spread on glass slides, fixed and stained by the rapid stain. The glass slides final product is going to be assessed by direct observation with optical microscopy, evidencing the cellular structures: superficial keratinized anucleated cells, superficial keratinized nucleated cells, superficial cells, intermediate cells and goblet cells. The obtained results are going to be presented in absolute values and percentage numbers. (AU)
