Abstract

Cervical and head and neck carcinomas affect a large part of the world's population and have already led to several deaths. Treatment of these tumors includes surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. However, these methods are highly invasive and can cause irrecoverable aesthetic lesions with significant functional impairment. Because of this, some plants have been used in the treatment of cancer and one of them has aroused scientific interest, Piper cubeba, used in the phytotherapeutic treatment of gonorrhea, syphilis, abdominal pain, diarrhea, enteritis, asthma and tumors in general. However, Piper cubeba lignans are diluted in Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), which is considered cytotoxic in amounts not yet well specified. Therefore, the present work aims to evaluate the effect of DMSO in different concentrations on morphology, proliferation and cell migration and cytotoxicity, observing how this compound acts and how these alterations can participate in the tumorigenic process. For this, four tumorigenic cell lines (SiHa, HeLa, Hep-2 and SCC-25) and a normal cell line (HaCaT) will be used, which will be treated with DMSO at different concentrations and compared with a control experiment without DMSO. Thus we can understand some of the mechanisms and interactions of this compound, in different concentrations, with normal and tumor cells in cellular toxicity. (AU)
