Abstract

The humid inland regions of the planet play a significant role in the water cycle and harbor important biodiversity niches. These regions are responsible for the control of vital ecological functions, including: regulation of the hydrological cycle, seasonal flood control, improvement and maintenance of water quality, as well as seasonal regulation of regional GHG emissions. In previous studies, a clear correlation was observed between monthly emissions of methane (CH4), rainfall and soil moisture. However, the acquisition of rainfall data in the field or through telemetric stations does not allow a continuous study with adequate spatial and temporal resolutions. On the other hand, in the last 3 years two orbital missions have provided continuous data of precipitation and soil moisture comprising the GPM (Global Precipitation Mission) and GLDAS (Global Land Data Assimilation System) missions, respectively. Based on such data, it is possible to study the Pantanal hydrological cycle with spatial and temporal scales. (AU)
