Abstract

The protozoan Giardia spp. is a flagellate intestinal parasite and six species are recognized: Giardia agilis that affects amphibians, Giardia psittaci and Giardia ardeae that infect birds, Giardia microti and Giardia muris that are in rodents and Giardia duodenalis that can cause disease in humans and some domestic animals, according to their assemblages, ranging from A to H. In this research project, will be carried out the molecular characterization of Giardia spp. in 140 faecal samples of cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus), being 70 poultry from a farm and 70 from households. For the detection of Giardia spp. amplifications of the 16S rRNA gene region will be performed by means of nested PCR and PCR. Samples that show intense amplification of the DNA fragment, visualized by means of 1.5% agarose gel electrophoresis, will be submitted to subsequent purification and sequencing. The descriptive statistical analysis will be carried out by means of the percentage calculation and the inferential statistic by the Chi-square test, to verify the association between the results of the tests used and the studied variables.
