Abstract

This research aims to analyze the construction of the two main characters from the novel The Invention of Wings (2014), by Sue Monk Kidd. To do so, the concept of character will be studied based on the theories of Beth Brait (1990), Antonio Candido (1987), Anatol Rosenfeld (1987), and also theories about the objects (Baudrillard, 1993), the space (Bachelard, 2008) and the symbols (Chevalier, 1969)*. Furthermore, this research intends to show the relevance of the novel's theme - racial and gender minorities search for liberation from an oppressing society - and how the construction of the characters and the symbology in the novel contribute to such theme.
