Abstract

The BEPE project is intended as auxiliary to the main, ongoing post-doctoral project that is being carried out at the Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology at the University of São Paulo "Commercial mechanisms, monetization and literacy in the Mediterranean and the Near East: social innovation and institutional inhibition of Phoenician commerce". The principal projects investigates the relationship between monetization and literacy in the context of the Phoenician colonization in the Mediterranean. The BEPE project will be hosted by the Department of Prehistory and Archaeology at the University of Seville, under the supervision of Prof. Eduardo Ferrer Albelda. It will take place over a course of 16 weeks (four months), twelve weeks of which will be used for research purposes at the Department of Prehistory and Archaeology at the University of Seville, while the remaining two will be used for visiting archaeological sites and museums connected to my project. Its main objective is to aid the amplification, quantitatively and qualitatively, of the data sets that will be analyzed in the course of the main project that deals with the relationship of early literacy and processes of monetization in the context of Phoenician colonization in the western Mediterranean, while offering me the opportunity to be based at a research institution that is leading in the field of Phoenician archaeology in Iberia. Thus, it will offer me the opportunity to use bibliographic resources, as well as aid my acquaintance of the archaeological record of south Iberia through actual acquaintance with the topography of sites in south Spain.
