Running in minimal footwear, partial minimal and barefoot: joint kinetics and loading rates patterns

Abstract

Background: The industry created the minimalist running shoes to satisfy the desire for a product that replicates the barefoot condition and protects the body from mechanical stress caused by running since many believe that the high incidence of injury was due to the excessive impact forces experienced whilst running. Minimal shoes was defined as those that have less cushioning and stability than conventional running shoes with a highly flexible sole and upper that weighs 200g or less, has a heel stack height of 20mm or less and a heel-toe differential of 7mm or less. The main objective of this study is to assess and compare biomechanical features during running habitual minimal shoes runners in one of de 3 conditions: (i) wearing a true minimal footwear (no midsole), (ii) partial minimal footwear (some cushioning from a minimal midsole), and (iii) barefoot. Methods: 30 habitual minimal shoes runners will be recruited. All subjects should be un-injured for at least 3 months prior to data collection and run a minimum of 10 miles/week in a minimal footwear. Ground reaction force (GRF) data will be used to calculate loading rates and impact peaks. Instantaneous loading rate (ILR) will be calculated as the maximum instantaneous slope (loading rate) and average loading rate (ALR). Joint moments in the sagittal, coronal, and transverse planes during the stance phase of running will be calculated bilaterally for each running condition through a full inverse-dynamic model. We hypothesize that the (H1) joint kinetics in true minimal shoes will be more similar to barefoot than partial minimal shoes and the (H2) runners in partial minimal shoes will exhibit greater loading rates than those in true minimal shoes.
