Abstract

Previous studies have found that individuals with patellofemoral pain (PFP) have decreased abduction strength of the hip, as well as increased ipsilateral trunk inclination, contralateral pelvic drop, hip adduction, and knee abduction during activities with bodyweight support. Considering that, a significant number of patients with patellofemoral osteoarthritis (PFOA) have a history of PFP, it is speculated that the mechanical causes of PFP and PFOA may be similar. However, although changes in the strength of the hip muscles and in the kinematics of the trunk, pelvis and lower limb during various functional activities have been reported in patients with PFP, this relationship has not been explored in PFOA. Thus, the objective of the present study is to evaluate if there is a difference in the maximum isometric abduction force of the hip and in the kinematics of the trunk, pelvis, hip and knee in the frontal plane during the unipodal squatting between individuals with PFOA and healthy individuals. The maximum isometric abduction force of the hip will be assessed by means of a Lafayette Manual Muscle Test dynamometer. The kinematic analysis will be done during the unipodal squatting at different angles of knee flexion (15º, 30º, 45º and 60º of flexion). The t-test for independent samples or the Mann-Whitney test will be used to compare the maximalisometric abduction force of the hip between the groups. For the kinematic variables, the mixed ANOVA two-way (Group X Angle of Knee Flexion) with post hoc of Bonferroni will be used. The significance level adopted for all tests will be 0.05. (AU)
