Abstract

Nowadays, to increase productivity of crops it is necessary to increase the use of agricultural inputs, for example herbicides, which when applied in an unreasonable way will lead to some kind of contamination, through leaching and reach groundwater. Atrazine can be considered as an example of the most used herbicide in Brazil and in the world and often detected as the main organic pollutant being a potential contaminant of groundwater. In this respect, it is necessary to know the elements' dynamic through the soil in a deep detail, aiming a better control of risks of a possible environmental "pollution". Therefore, the main objective of this research is to simulate the atrazine dynamics using HYDRUS 2D model in temperate soils cultivated with corn. The research will be carried out at U. S. Meat Animal Research Center, Clay Center, Nebraska (USA). The research will be divided 4 steps: 1) an experimental field will have corn plantation and soil solutions will be collected; 2) atrazine transport parameters will be obtained by Breakthrough Curves (BTC's) and numerical adjustments using STANMOD (HYDRUS package); 3) Numerical simulation of solution distribution (water and atrazine) using HYDRUS 2D model during the development of the crop and 4) Evaluating model. With the results, it is expected to collaborate with the atrazine application management improvement and to assist the development of agricultural sustainability. (AU)
