Abstract

The project aims to study and characterize the tribological behavior of layers of expanded phases formed on the surface of a low - carbon 410S stainless steel with martensitic ferritic structure by low temperature plasma nitriding. It is intended to characterize the behavior of the expanded ferrite/martensite layer in instrumented linear sclerometry tests, characterizing the apparent friction coefficient and the critical loads Lc1 and Lc2 to initiate cracking and chipping and detachment of the nitride layer. Secondly, the studies will be concentrated on characterizing the behavior of the nitride layers in microabrasion tests to determine, aiming to determine the coefficient of micro abrasive wear of the nitride layers, compared to the AISI 410S steel without nitriding. Based on the results we intend to discuss the mechanisms of wear resistance and friction reduction in expanded layers obtained by nitriding. (AU)
