Abstract

This sub-project (presented in the main proposal as project 10) describes the steps we will take to reach the proposal of a clinical gene therapy protocol for the treatment of canine Melanoma. We propose that immunotherapy with p14Arf and IFN-beta may be beneficial in the treatment of Melanoma. In preparation for pre-clinical trials of experimental gene therapy in humans, the treatment of Melanoma in dogs may reveal the proper functioning of our approach. The clinical aspects of human and canine Melanoma are similar and the treatment of dogs as demonstration of efficacy of new therapies is relevant. In the future, we hope to treat canine patients with Melanoma with our immunotherapy mediated by the adenoviral vector bearing p14Arf and IFN-beta. At the moment, we will start with the assembly and characterization of the vectors carrying the canine versions of p14Arf and IFN-beta cDNAs. (AU)
