Abstract

Pfaffia paniculata, popularly known as Brazilian ginseng, has numerous compounds with diverse biological activities, but there are few studies that evaluate its antimicrobial potential. In order to remedy this gap, the objective of this work is to evaluate the antimicrobial action of the P. paniculata glycolic extract on Candida albicans biofilms associated with a bacterium, such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus mutans and Enterococcus faecalis. For this, standard inoculums will be prepared in 106 cells / ml of each microorganism, after which the inocula will be distributed in 96-well microplates according to their respective group. The plate will be incubated for 48 h in a bacteriological oven at 37ºC (5% CO2 for S. mutans), with exchange of the culture medium in 24 h for biofilm maintenance. After the formation of the biofilm, 6 different concentrations of the P. paniculata extract will be applied for 5 minutes and 24 hours. For the control group, appropriate culture medium will be used. After the treatments, 3 washes will be performed with 0.9% sterile saline solution. Then the biofilms will be sent for measurement through the tests of MTT and crystal violet, obtaining the biomass and the metabolic activity of the microorganisms. The data that obtained a normal distribution will be analyzed by the ANOVA test complemented by Tukey (p <0.05%).
