Abstract

It is known that in comparison to clopidogrel, ticagrelor shows significant benefit regarding ischemic events and mortality. The importance of these findings, to some extent unexpected, raised the hypothesis that other properties of the medication could be partially responsible for these benefits. Recently, ticagrelor has been shown to be associated with increased adenosine plasma levels and one of the mechanisms is through the inhibition of adenosine reuptake by erythrocytes. Adenosine is known to have a myocardial cytoprotective effect under physiological and pathophysiological conditions in response to tissue stress and hypoxia, and may explain the additional beneficial effects with ticagrelor.
