Abstract

The high exigency on the performances of equine athletes often results in small focal articular injuries. Cumulatively, they can cause synovitis and consequential release of several inflammatory mediators within the articular microenvironment. Without correct treatment, the synovitis leads to various events, resulting in osteoarthritis development. Regenerative therapies, as the use of mesenchymal stem cells (MSC), have been largely applied aiming to stop the progression of this disease. Involving the MSC in hydrogel microcapsules is an encouraging method for articular inflammatory suppression and delivery of therapeutic agents. The aim of this study is to evaluate the behavior of allogeneic MSC derived from synovial membrane and involved by bioabsorbable microcapsules over the inflammatory mediators on the treatment of tibiotarsal synovitis in horses. Fifteen horses divided in three equal groups will be submitted to experimental tibio-tarsal synovitis. They will be treated with free MSCs, encapsulated MSCs or buffered saline. Harvests of synovial fluid will allow quantifying the inflammatory mediators, performing conventional laboratorial analysis and determining oxidative stress, aiming to compare the immunomodulatory effect between the different therapies. A higher immunomodulatory effect in the group treated with MSCs involved by microcapsules is expected. (AU)
