Abstract

The series of experiments in the present research project is designed to evaluate the effects of variables within reinforcement schedules on cooperative responding in pairs of rats. Experiment 1 is designed to verify whether cooperation is maintained by a cooperative schedule (fixed-ratio [FR]) or whether this behavior emerges merely as a byproduct of the high rate of individual responding generated by that schedule. Experiment 2 aims to replicate findings on the functional relation between ratio size (FR) and rate of cooperative responding by using a larger set of values than the one used in previous research (Carvalho et al., submitted). Experiments 3 and 4 will investigate the effects of interval schedules on cooperative responding. These experiments will employ similar designs to that of Carvalho et al. (Experiment 1), and to the one designed in Experiment 2 of the present project, respectively. In Experiment 3, a fixed-interval (FI) and a variable-interval (VI) schedule will replace the ratio schedules employed in Experiment 1 of Carvalho et al; Experiment 4 is design to evaluate the effects of parametric manipulation of FI schedules on cooperative responding in rats.
