Phylogeny and biogeographic analysis of the family Disteniidae Thomson, 1861 (Insecta, Coleoptera)

Abstract

The Disteniidae family comprises 392 described species in the world, included in four tribes and 37 genera. Despite the efforts of many researchers in recent years to describe and unravel the diversity of the group, there are not phylogenetic works for this group. Most of the current authors consider that tribe Disteniini, the largest group in the family with 376 species and 32 genera, is a non-monophyletic group; furthermore, many of the genera of the tribe are considered to be artificial groups. The biology of its species is practically unknown, and only Elytrimitatrix (E.) undata (Disteniini) has immature stages and host plants known, which feeds on Carya sp., Cercis sp. and Ulmus sp. One of the objectives of this project is conduct the first phylogenetic analysis for Disteniidae using morphological characters in order to test the monophyly of the family and the tribes, and to propose taxonomic arrangements based on the obtained results. Furthermore, to propose a biogeographic hypothesis on the origin and diversification of the family. Besides the mentioned goals, we also will describe eventual new taxa and provide new biological data, as host plants, for the studied groups.
