Abstract

The distribution of stream fishes suffers influences of environmental features interacting in several different scales. Understanding the extent in witch these scales relate to population dynamics and structure is a relevant issue whit implications to conservation, management and sustainable use of biological resources. In this context, the knowledge about the movement patterns of organisms between habitat patches that integrate the environmental matrix and the factors that control and influence these movements are fundamental to comprehend theyr roles on the populations structure, dynamics and their connections on the hierarchical shape of the river basins, as well as their fragilities. This project is designed to be a two steps study, where on Step I, we are going to be develop a model to describe distributions and abundances of four conspicuous fish species in the south-eastern coastal basins (Deuterodon iguape, Rhamdioglanis transfasciatus, Kronichthys heyland, Characidium japuhybense), through which is going to be evaluated and identified the relationships of the populations descriptors with environmental variables at different spatial scales. On the Step II we are going to develop a study of the movement of Rhamdioglanis transfasciatus in order evaluate it´s movement patterns and describe the influence of environmental and individual characteristics on the identified patterns trough a modeling process.
