Abstract

Triatoma sordida is one of the main species with vector competence for the transmission of Chagas' disease in Brazil, which also occurs in Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay and Uruguay. Several studies indicate a polymorphism in T. sordida, which led to the suggestion of the cryptic speciation phenomenon in this species and, above all, the recent characterization of three possible different taxa, namely T. sordida sensu stricto, T. sordida Argentina and T. sordida La Paz. Taking into account that the accomplishment of experimental crosses can help in different aspects, such as the understanding of the taxonomy and systematics and the mechanisms of isolation that limit the gene flow, as well as to evaluate the role of natural hybridization in the generation of new genetic variants can lead to adaptive evolution and / or the foundation of new evolutionary lineages), this project aims at carrying out a multidisciplinary and integrated analysis of evolutionary (pre and post-zygotic barriers) and taxonomic in T. sordida, through experimental crosses and analysis of hybrids resulting to the F3, with emphasis on the analysis of the evolutionary dynamics of experimental crosses (copulation, oviposition, hatching and development of hybrids) as well as the analysis of reproductive viability (spermatogenesis and morphology of male and female gonads), the characterization of the nuclear and nucleolar organization of somatic cells, the pattern of segregation of phenotypic and genotypic characteristics of parental and vectorial capacity of experimental hybrids in the transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi. These results will allow elucidate evolutionary and taxonomic issues about T. sordida, and assist in the direction of vector control programs. (AU)
