Effect of simulated brushing on the gloss, roughness, and wear on chairside CAD/CAM materials

Abstract

New CAD/CAM restorative materials not requiring laboratorial steps are being marketed. However, the longevity of such materials might be affected by abrasive episodes resulted from tooth-brushing. Due to the fact the decision choice for such materials requires direction, the aim of the present study is to evaluate the effect of simulated brushing on surface gloss, roughness and wear of different CAD/CAM restorative materials. Cylindrical specimens will be fabricated (N=15/group) from blocks and divided into the following groups: Hybrid ceramic (Enamic, Vita Zahnfabrik), Hybrid ceramic + glaze (Enamic, Vita Zahnfabrik), Leucite reinforced ceramic (Empress CAD, Ivoclar Vivadent), and Resin composite (Grandioblocs, Voco). Specimens will be polished in silicon abrasive discs grit P1200, P2400, and P4000 for 30, 60 and 120 seconds, respectively. One hundred thousand brushing strokes will be performed in a simulating brushing machine using a 1:3 fluoride deionized water slurry. Surface gloss and roughness will be assessed after simulated aging. Wear will be assessed by superposing baseline and final profiles. Additional analyses will be performed by means of microhardness and Scanning Electronic Microscopy. Data will be collected and analyzed with adequate statistical analysis. (AU)
