Abstract

It is known that more and more there is a growth in the number and intensity of natural disasters caused by anthropic and natural actions such as relief, geology, inclination of slopes, climate and others. The municipality of Petrópolis, located in the mountainous region of the state of Rio de Janeiro, is known for the recurrent cases of natural disasters, mainly mass movements and floods, which occur mostly during the summer due to high rainfall, resulting in deaths and homelessness every year. Thus, this research seeks to make a preliminary approach to the factors that influence the severity of natural disasters, focusing on the social and environmental vulnerability of the city of Petrópolis. Therefore, to achieve the proposed objective, this project proposes to use socio-environmental indicators; geoprocessing tools such as ArcGIS; outline the profile of the population exposed to risk; and to elaborate maps of social and environmental vulnerability of the population.
