Abstract

Polynemidae is a family of primarily marine fishes with eight genera and 41 extant species. They are globally distributed and can reach up to two meters long. Polynemids have economic importance in regions where their abundance are higher. The phylogenetic allocation of polynemids within Percomorphacea is uncertain and have never been tested based on either morphological or molecular data. Polynemid morphology is also largely unknown, with little osteological and nearly no myological information documented in the literature. This project aims to study aspects of the skeleton and musculature in representatives of the Polynemidae and use these data to perform a cladistic analyses that propose, for the first time, a hypothesis of interrelationships among the eight genera of the family.
