Abstract

Three studies were designed to evaluate the differences among varieties and species of legumes and grasses in their nutritional composition and utilization by ruminants, 1) Silages of timothy-meadow fescue mixture or whole-crop barley harvested at two maturity stages fed to weathers with or without supplementation of rapeseed meal - Effects on in vivo digestibility, faecal particle size distribution and protein utilization; 2) Effects of variety and harvest time on yield and the quality of protein and fibre of red clover; and 3) Effects of variety and cut on yield and nutritive value and quality of protein and fibre of lucerne in comparison to red clover. The field phases of the experiments were performed by Dr. Elisabet Nadeau's team at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) and the Post-Doctorate intern will work on the data analysis, literature review and manuscript writing for submission. The objectives of this project are a) to study the effect of crop, maturity at harvest and protein supplementation of grass silage and whole-crop barley silage diets on intake, in vivo digestibility, faecal particle size distribution and protein utilization when fed to weathers, and b) to evaluate the effects of varieties of lucerne and red clover and to compare red clover with lucerne on the nutritive value and the quality of protein and fibre in a three-cut system.
