Abstract

This project aims to investigate the mechanism of noun incorporation in the language Tenetehára, which happens in the two following ways: (i) total incorporation of the object into v°, and (ii) incorporation of the head of the genitive phrase into v° (possessor raising). In total incorporation, the direct object incorporates into the root of the verbal predicate and generates a new predicate that behaves as an intransitive. However, in possessor raising constructions, only part of the object-namely the possessed NP, head of the genitive phrase-incorporates into the head of vP. The result of this process does not alter the initial transitive structure. That is, in possessor raising constructions the verbal valence is not reduced, despite the incorporation. In addition, regarding semantics, I have observed that speakers of Tenetehára point to two different interpretations for sentences with and without incorporation. Thereof, I intend to research which organization constant is behind this apparently arbitrary paradigm of interpretation. The initial hypothesis is related to the notion of verbal aspect (aktionsart) and the definitions of accomplishment and achievement (Vendler, 1967). Following this line of reasoning, I propose that constructions without noun incorporation belong to the semantic class of verbal accomplishment predicates, whereas the constructions with noun incorporation belong to the class of achievements.
