Abstract

Despite constituting valuable source of phylogenetic information, skeletal musculature in the Gymnotiformes has been poorly explored by systematists. Less than 2% of all morphological characters employed in the major phylogenetic analyses with the order derive from the myology. All remaining publications on the musculature of the Gymnotiformes are primarily descriptive and include only a few cranial muscles surveyed in less than a dozen species. The present project aims the study of the facial, gular, branchial, body, and fin musculature in a broad range of gymnotiform representatives. This approach will allow a better understanding of the evolution of the main muscular complexes across the order and their implications for the gymnotiform phylogeny. Studies concerning comparative myology and cladistic analyses within the Gymnotiformes are planned to be published in high impact journals.
