Abstract

Liver transplantation is the only therapeutic alternative for the patient with terminal liver disease. In most transplant centers around the world, the demand for organs is much higher than the supply, which maintains high mortality rates on waiting lists. Organ donation in Brazil is really below what is required for the demand of receptors. According to data from ABTO (Associação Brasileira de Transplantes de Órgãos), about 42% of families refuse organ donation in the interview of potential donors. Meanwhile, from January to September 2017, there were 472 patient deaths on the waiting list for a liver transplant. Organ donors with brain death have been the main source of cadaveric liver grafts worldwide and the only one in Brazil. However, irreversible respiratory and cardio circulatory arrest is a cause of death more frequent than encephalic death, and donation after cardiac arrest (DCD) have been widely used around the globe. However, the usage of donors without brain death in our country is controversial and needs discussion. The undergraduate medical students are a very interesting part of society to start this discussion. We sought, through this research project, to evaluate the knowledge, understanding and acceptance of medical students of the University of São Paulo regarding the donation of multiple organs by patients who suffered cardiac arrest. In addition, we intend to understand if there is a change in the understanding and acceptance of the topic over the course of the six years of the medical school. (AU)
