Abstract

The proposal aims to study the geological history of the Barreiras Formation in SE Brazil, and it has three objectives: 1. To bracket the history of weathering, deposition and iron-cementation of the Barreiras Formation; 2. To investigate the paleo-exposure history of the Barreiras Formation sediments and to determine whether goethite-cementation occurred mainly while sediments were exposed at the surface or after burial; and 3. To study the stable isotope composition (18O/16O) of goethites of known ages to determine the paleoclimatic conditions prevailing during ferruginization of the sediments. Through the detail mineralogical, geochronological and isotopic investigation of iron oxyhydroxides, this project will improve our understanding about the tectonic and climatic conditions active during formation of the Barreiras Formation in SE Brazil.
