Abstract

The current period is marked by the emergence of a new geographical milieu, which combination of variables such as technique, science and information changes the contents of the space and modifies the social actions. The new technologies of information and communication, combined with the rising of the Internet, contribute to expand the importance of the pair virtual-material. In this context, the e-commerce appears - an updated version of commerce in the techno-scientific-informational milieu, supported by logistics as its material ballast. This research aims to discuss the e-commerce as an economic activity related to the technical and political contents of the territory, in the context of the actual spatial and international division of labor, the acceleration of the commodities' circulation by logistics and the expansion of the techno-scientific-informational milieu in Brazil. Based on a concept system by Milton Santos, we intend to comprehend the e-commerce as a geographical phenomenon. It will be collected data about: technical and normative conditions that allowed the e-commerce to start in Brazil; the agents involved in this activity, their conflicts and cooperation; the logistics applied, with the transportation modes and the delivery times used; the role of the financial institutions as mediators; the networks built and their relation with the urban system. The data will be mainly acquired by means of bibliographical and documental sources, fieldwork, interviews, and online simulations on the e-commerce companies' websites. After theoretical discussion, analysis of the results and graphical and cartographical work, we intend to contribute to better understand the Brazilian territory through the new activities that rose from the imbrication of the key variables of the contemporaneity.
