Abstract

Myxoma is a benign odontogenic neoplasm with slow but locally aggressive growth. It is formed by star like or fusiform cells interspersed by a mucoid matrix with few collagen fibers and when there is a greater tendency to produce collagen fibers, it is called fibromyxoma. They usually appear in adolescents and young adults, not occurring predilection by sex or race .Most common jaws are often associated with the painless expansion of the involved bone. Radiographically, it presents as a multiloculated radiolucent area in bubbles of soap or honeycomb that can displace or cause reabsorption of the teeth Objectives: To describe the clinical and microscopic characteristics and to analyze the protein expression of Osterix and Runx-2 in myxoma and fibromyxoma and, compare the results to dental pulp. Material and methods: Twenty cases of myxoma, 20 of fibromyxoma and 20 of dental pulps (control) will be included, which will be microscopically reviewed by light microscopy and subsequently submitted to immunohistochemical reactions for the above-mentioned proteins. The cell count identification will be performed by 3 independent evaluators, performed through the cytoplasmic immunostaining method. In the statistical analysis, the chi-square test or Fischer's exact test will be used for the comparison between groups and categorical variables. (AU)
