Abstract

Climate change may impact forests worldwide and therefore interfere with the biogeochemical cycles. In order to predict extreme events it is necessary to understand the climatic variability before human actions, a challenge in tropical regions where the climate records are limited to recent decades. Natural records as the tree rings allow investigations as how climate modulates tree growth, providing annualresolved data of these climatic variables before any human disturbances. This project intends to built tree ring width and isotopic chronologies from species at the Parque Nacional Cavernas do Peruaçu - PNCP. In addition, the Non-Structural Carbohydrates (NSC) from the last 30 years will be dated through 14C to understand how its remobilization and dynamics may affect dendrochronological analyses. The production of long data series in this region enables the delimitation of climatic variations distribution and intensity in the last centuries, focusing in the South American Monsoon hydroclimatic system. These data will also provide more realistic information to climatic models and help predict extreme events in Brazil, assisting in public policies development for the most economically vulnerable groups.
