Abstract

Among the characteristics of the aggregates, its roughness can influence the performance of the concrete in both the fresh and hardened state. Aggregates with high roughness provide concrete with better strengths, as they improve the properties in the paste-aggregate interface. On the other hand, there is a reduction in the viscosity of the paste, due to the increased friction between the particles. Despite the importance of roughness there are no studies that perform a multiscale analysis (macroroughness and microroughness), preventing a better understanding of the extent of its effects on concrete. Therefore, this project proposes a multiscale study of the influence of the roughness of different aggregates on the formation of macrodefects in the paste-aggregate interface. To do so, the roughness of the aggregates will be measured through a method that uses optical interferometry and provides quantitative data in 3D. Pastes with different viscosities will be produced containing the coarse aggregates studied and analyzed through microtomography to verify the appearance of macrodefects. Acquisitions of microscopic images of the polished surfaces of the aggregates will also be made to quantify the edges between the different crystals, aiming to relate the quantitative parameters of roughness to the microstructure parameters of the rocks.
