Abstract

Barley is a grain of great commercial importance. It is grown in colder environments, being part of the group of winter cereals. The genus Fusarium is commonly found in these grains, causing diseases such as giberela and producing secondary metabolites, including mycotoxins. Mycotoxins may cause an impact on human and animal health, and lead to loss of quality in the final by-products of barley, resulting in substantial losses to the economy. Considering this information, the main objective of this project is the morphological and phylogenetic identification of the Fusarium species isolated from barley grown in Brazil, with the purpose of characterizing potential toxigenic groups in this cereal.
