Abstract

A change at the paradigm of visuality shuffled the borders between the science and the art in the nineteenth century, as can be seen in the case of Jean-Martin Charcot (1825-1893). Neurologist that severely exercised the clinical practice - consolidated as the new model of the modern medicine - he worked with hysteria, disease historically associated as a woman's disease. His study resulted in the production of the photographic iconography of Salpêtriére, work available online at the archive "Charcot Digital Fund" (maintained by University Pierre and Marie Curie). This will be the main source in the investigation from this research, through the analysis of its images. The project, unfolding of two scientific initiations and a monograph, has a double objective: 1-) to understand how medicine, gender and the photography relates with each other in the production of the iconography; 2-) to investigate why this work, created in the scientific field and with scientific purposes was associated with art. Therefore it will be necessary to assert the emergence of clinical practice and how this new model of medicine is related to the image production; to find out how was the use of photography in the medical field and understand with which practices and discourses the production of these images was linked; demonstrate how medical photography has reiterated hysteria as a women's disease and, lastly, understand what elements (próprio = own? e no plural?) the context of the nineteenth century allowed the sharing of a symbolic universe between science and art, ensuring the iconography's ambiguous character between these areas.
