Abstract

The migration process is old and has become an integral part of global economic and social development. Migration appears to be an important risk factor for psychosis. Recent studies have reported high incidences of psychosis in groups that have migrated to other countries or from rural to urban areas. In addition, first generation migrants are slower to seek mental health services when they first develop outbreaks or prodrome symptoms than natives and second-generation immigrants. One reason may be social isolation in urban areas, lifestyle and the ability to relate to the environment. Negative events, including poor adaptation to migration, may impact brain development by inducing a persistent state of vulnerability to psychosis. Such states are termed ultra high risk (UHR) for psychosis. The present study aims to verify the presence of the risk factor migration in the UHR population and to compare it to a normal population, and the other one of patients with schizophrenia. Thus, to assess in what proportion the migration factor is present in the UHR population and if this factor makes it possible to predict a greater risk for conversion to frank psychosis. The sample is population and consists of 236 individuals (103 UHR and 133 controls). They will be interviewed by telephone with migration questions from the Bologna questionnaire (modified). The data will be correlated by specific tests (chi-square and student T test or ANOVA for categorical and continuous variables, respectively), through SPSS 25 software. (AU)
