Abstract

Chironomidae is one of the most widely distributed and abundant Diptera families in the world, Brazil being one of the hotsposts of its biodiversity. Chironomidae species living in marine environments have been reported in costal zones throughout the world. These species belong to various taxonomic groups, including representatives of the subfamilies Telmatogetoninae, Orthocladiinae and Chironominae. Telmatogetoninae is restricted to tide pools and marine habitats, and is represented by two genera: Telmatogeton Schiner, 1866 and Thalassomya Schiner, 1856. Telmatogeton is reported in Brazil due do the occurrence of three species: T. atlanticum Oliveira, 1950, T. eshu Oliveira, 2000 and T. nanum Oliveira, 1950, although only adults are known. Thalassomya, on the other hand, was recently reported in Brazil with the description of the adult male, pupa and larva of Thalassomya gutae Neubern, Silva and Trivinho-Strixino, 2013. Thus, in particular for the subfamily Telmatogetoninae, the absence of taxonomic knowledge in Brazil; the lack of knowledge about their immature; and the need to expand the reference collections that will allow intensive studies with these organisms. Potentially, the data generated can be used in biomonitoring studies, identification keys development appropriate to the species recognition and in phylogenetic matrices, increasing the quality and the accuracy of hypotheses of relationship of the group.
