Abstract

The inclusion of the immature stages on the systematic studies of Chironomidae will, in many double the number of available characters, thus aiding the strength of the phylogenetic studies as well as the biogegraphic analyses based on them. Many of the studies dealing with chironomids are ecological investigations where only larvae are sampled and they can not be ascribed to any genus. This project, however, addresses this problem in associating immatures and imagines, knowledge that can aid future studies on the biology or ecology of the Ncotropical Orthoc1adiinae. A more detailed distributional pattern of the Chironomidae along the Atlantic rainforest, applying geographic and Cladistic Biogeography methods, is also one of the main targets of this project. This project also addresses the description of new species and genera that belong to the Museu de Zoologia da USP, including the description of three new genera with scalpellate acrostichals and a new genus in the 'Brillia group'. The distribution patterns and limits of the populations are poorly known for the entire Neotropics, as well as for the Atlantic rainforest. A main scope of this project is to clarify the distribution and occurrence limits of the studied orthoclad species as well as sampling additional material for morphological and molecular analyses. A great deal of the sampling efforts will be directed to the immature stages and their association with imagines in order to serve as a solid basis for future ecological surveys dealing with Neotropical Orthocladiinae fauna, of which many genera are known based on adults only (e.g. Oleia Andersen et Mendes, Saetherocladius Andersen et Mendes, Saetherolabis Andersen et Mendes, Saetherocryptus Andersen et Mendes, Saetherops Andersen et Mendes).
