Abstract

Aquatic ecosystems have been altered due to human activities. Toxic metals, such as cadmium (Cd), are released into the environment as a result of mining and industrial processes, negatively influencing the animals' physiology, altering the reproductive cycle, maturation of reproductive organs and hormones related to the process of crustaceans' molting. Thus, the project aims to evaluate the influence of Cd on reproduction and molting processes in Callinectes danae, comparing animals from regions with different levels of pollution. The hormone levels related to the molting process (hyperglycemic hormone - CHH; ecdysteroids - ecdysone) will be measured using molecular biology techniques (gene expression for CHH and ecdysone receptor expression). It is expected to relate Cd and exposure time to toxic metal and changes in hormone levels, assessing how contaminated environments may interfere negatively in the reproductive process of these animals.
