Abstract

We aim, in this research, a complement to the current Master's research (grant #2016/25008-2), on the work Prosas Bárbaras, by Eça de Queirós (1845-1900), published posthumously , under the organization of Luís de Magalhães (1903), which brings texts published in newspapers in the second half of the 1860s. This collection is considered one of the less known titles of the author, and, in general, it is discredited by the critic, to be associated with the fantastic. However, in our work, we purpose a new perspective of the work of Eça de Queiros, evidencing the fantastic aspect in his initial production, pointing out that these texts should not be seen as a reverie of the author's youth, as some manuals literature affirm, because Eça already inserts social criticism in these narratives. Thus, we intend, with this research, to broaden and deepen the reflections on this title, little understood by critics. For this, it is essential to collect more bibliography on the first publications of Eça and on the concept of fantastic and unusual, both in the nineteenth century and recent studies in Portugal. In addition, it is also desired to survey the various editions of Prosas Bárbaras, with the purpose of verifying the differences between them, since this collection has undergone a corpus oscillation, with additions or reductions of texts, and the alteration of some titles, depending on the organizer.
