Abstract

Criticism tends to divide the work of Eça de Queirós into three phases. The last two phases, which correspond to the realistic production - which includes works such as O Crime do Padre Amaro (1875) and O Primo Basílio (1878) - and the so-called "last Eça" production - which includes works such as A Ilustre Casa de Ramires (1900) and A Cidade e as Serras (1901) - have received the attention of the scholars, who contributed to the construction of an image of the author, which eventually crystallized. The first phase refers to the writings published in newspapers during the years of 1866 and 1867, which were later compiled posthumously under the title Prosas Bárbaras (1903), in addition to the novel O Mistério da Estrada de Sintra (1870), published in partnership with Ramalho Ortigão. This first phase of Eça is little explored by literature manuals, because it is viewed by critics as a period of immaturity and literary experience, which would distance itself from its acclaimed realism by approaching the fantastic aesthetic or, more precisely, the unusual. It is our objective in this research to study how Eça appropriates the fantastic model in the tales of Prosas Bárbaras to discuss topics such as social criticism, art, madness, man's relationship with nature and the Devil. We will work with the hypothesis that, although Eça is an author recognized as the great representative of realism in Portugal, there is, in the work of the author of Os Maias, an important dialogue with the fantastic and the unusual, that still needs to be investigated, mainly in his first productions.
