| Abstract | |
We aim to investigate the first fictional productions by Eça de Queirós (1845-1900), published in Gazeta de Portugal (1866-1867) and in Revolução de Setembro (1870), which were compiled, posthumously, under the title Prosas bárbaras (1903), by Luís de Magalhães. We are going to study the narratives “A ladainha da dor”, “Misticismo humorístico”, “As misérias. I – Entre a neve”, “Farsas”, “Onfália Benoiton”, “Notas marginais”, “O milhafre”, “O lume”, “Memórias duma forca”, “O Senhor Diabo” and “A morte de Jesus”. The beginning of Eça’s career is little explored by literature manuals and it is often left in the background by scholars, for it is seen by critics as a period of immaturity and literary experience that would distance itself from his acclaimed realism and would approach to the fantastic or, more precisely, to the unusual. It is our objective to study how Eça uses the unusual in Prosas bárbaras fictional texts. For that, we use as a theoretical reference the considerations of Covizzi (1978), García (2007, 2012), Batalha (2011, 2012), among others, that make a reflection on the unusual. We work with the hypothesis that Eça de Queirós – an author canonically known as a realist – inserts social criticism, so common throughout his production, already in his unusual texts from the beginning of his career. It is, therefore, a valuable reading of the first queriosian fictional productions. (AU) | |
