Abstract

In this postdoctoral project, the work of the Belgian specialist in visual poetry, Francis Edeline, will be investigated. His background in Biochemistry and his work as director of the Belgian Center for Water Studies have not prevented him from also becoming a poet, musician and semioticist, especially interested in poetry, and passionate about its visual element. Edeline has written dozens of articles in which he proposes readings, theorizations and methods to approach this poetic genre, writing on a wide range of authors of international visual poetry, including Brazilian concrete poets. His thinking is based on principles of Linguistics and Semiotics, and he has also been a member of the Groupe µ since it was founded in 1967, 50 years ago. This study proposes to collect, analyze, organize, introduce, and translate Edeline's articles on the study of visual poetry, with a view to the publication of a volume which will bring together these works which up until now have been dispersed. The project has the full support of Edeline, who has already made himself available and who is also gathering other personal documents, besides the articles, which he believes can elucidate the studies on the work of the artists he writes about. It is thus hoped to launch new theoretical bases for the study of these poems, develop the study on visual poetry in general, question the approaches to the language written by Linguistics and discuss the problems of the relations between text and image in Semiotics.
