Abstract

The members of the family Tinamidae belong to one of the oldest lineages of birds and, along with the ratites, constitute the sister-group of all the other extant birds. Exclusive to the Neotropics, they are threatened by hunting. The genus Crypturellus is the richest in the family and includes the majority of the forest dwelling species, carrying 22 species. The taxonomic status of many of these taxa is controversial, and many subspecies are not diagnosable or are candidate to full species. The Brown Tinamou (Crypturellus obsoletus) is a species with brown upperparts, grey head and chestnut underparts. Nine subspecies are currently recognized, and they are distributed disjointly within altitude forests through South America. They occur in southeastern Brazil, spreading through Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay, apart from isolated populations from Pará, Rondônia and Mato Grosso. They also inhabit the Andes, from Ecuador south to Bolivia, and there are isolated populations in Venezuela. Due to the confusion in distinguishing these taxa, this study seeks to assess the populations' diagnosability based on plumage, morphometric and vocal characters
